Press Release # 03112014(3) Shooting Incident in San Angelo

On Monday, March 10, 2014 at approximately 11:20 p.m., San Angelo Public Safety Communications received a 911 call about a shooting at 300 W. Washington Dr. at Desiree's Gentleman's Club.  San Angelo Police Officers Martin and Garrett arrived quickly to secure the scene and to investigate further.    


Detectives with the San Angelo Police Department Criminal Investigations Division were called to the location for further investigation.  Subsequent to the field investigation, Officers located shell casings from a .45 caliber firearm in the roadway, as well as multiple holes in both the building and several vehicles in the parking lot.  It is believed 7 to 10 shots were fired during the incident.


Although rounds were fired toward and into the occupied building there were no injuries reported at the scene.

Deadly Conduct (PC 22.05) Discharging a firearm at or in the direction of a habitation, building, or a vehicle is a 3rd degree felony.


This is an ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time. 



Crash Leads to Drug Arrest

March 4, 2014, at approximately 1 a.m. San Angelo Police Officer John Bouligny observed a vehicle that had hit the concrete barrier to the entrance ramp of Houston Harte Expressway West bound at 6th Street.  Officer Bouligny noticed the driver in the crash had left the vehicle and was not on scene. While conducting his investigation a male subject arrived and informed Officer Bouligny that the driver had gone to the McDonald's on N. Bryant and was waiting for a ride.


Officer Bouligny had other officers go the McDonald's and attempt to locate the driver and check on his condition. Officer Christopher Martin and Officer Emory McAndrews located the driver identified as Michael Coates (08/13/1972).  During the initial contact with Coates, he denied being the driver of the vehicle as well as being Michael Coates.

Officer Martin and McAndrews recognized Coates from previous San Angelo Police Department encounters with him; during a routine warrant search learned he had several outstanding warrants. He was taken into custody and while searching him, the officers located 2.1 grams of Methamphetamine as well as a small plastic bag of Marijuana weighing less than 2 ounces in his jacket pockets.   Coates was not injured in the crash, he denied anyone else being in the car with him at the time of the crash. The vehicle was removed from the ramp by a wrecker. 

Officer McAndrews gave Coates a ride to the jail where he was booked in on the following charges:

Possession of Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, a warrant for Possession of a prohibited weapon, a warrant for Possession of Marijuana (Go off Bound) and two Municipal Court warrants.

Press Release #030514(01) Car Crash Causes Damage to Local Restaurant

         March 5, 2014 



At approximately 3:20 am this morning, San Angelo Police Officers responded to the   200 block of N. Koenigheim in response to a motor vehicle accident.   Officers located the vehicle at 202 N. Koenigheim crashed into the Subway restaurant.

 The vehicle, 2003 Ford Taurus,  driven by Ryan Bakurza (02/08/80) was traveling northbound on Koenigheim when it left the roadway in the 200 block and crashed into the southwest corner of the building.  Bazkura was the only occupant of the vehicle and was not injured in the crash

 Subsequent to the field investigation, it was determined that alcohol was a factor in the crash.    Officers also found less than 2 ounces of marijuana and less than a gram of methamphetamine on Bazkura during the investigation.   Bazkura was charged with DWI, Possession of Marijuana and a Controlled Substance, and cited for a Driving with a Suspended License and Failure to Control Speed.


The monetary damages to the building where not known at the time the report was written.

Press Release #022714(15)-Vehicle Pursuit

At approximately 12:30 p.m. today, San Angelo Police Officer J. Palmer observed a white 2010 Mitsubishi Galant with an expired inspection sticker in the 2600 block of Sunset Dr.    Officer Palmer immediately activated the motorcycles emergency lights and sirens, however; the driver refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit ensued.


The suspect continued to flee by traveling south on Sunset Dr. towards Knickerbocker and by running the red light while turning left onto Knickerbocker.  The suspect continued to flee while traveling east on Knickerbocker and reached speeds of 55 mph in an attempt to evade Officer Palmer.  The pursuit ended as the vehicle turned right onto Industrial Dr. and then into the Stadium Oaks Apartment Complex parking lot.  Officer Palmer was able to arrest the suspect at this time without any further incident.


The suspect was identified as Daniel Blackburn (08/15/89) of San Angelo.   Blackburn was the only occupant of the vehicle and no vehicles were damaged or persons injured as a result of the pursuit or the arrest.  Blackburn was wanted for County Warrants (2) and was charged with Evading Arrest/Detention by Vehicle and received citations for Driving While License Suspended, Expired Motor Vehicle Inspection, and Disregard Traffic Signal (Red Light).



Press Release #022714(14)-Subject Goes to Jail after Foot Chase

On February 26, 2014, at about 9:00 p.m., San Angelo Police Detective T. Griffith, while working the Traffic Safety Program observed a 2001 GMC Jimmy SUV Fail to Yield Right of Way in the 600 Block of Cottonwood. Detective Griffith conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle for the violation, as soon as the vehicle came to a stop, the driver, later identified as 27 year old Juan Alvarez exited the vehicle and ran on foot, Detective Griffith gave chase while requesting assistance. San Angelo Lake and Park Officer T. Berrie, who was on duty and in the area responded to assist, observed Alvarez attempting to go over a 6 foot wooden fence, upon seeing Berrie, Alvarez abandoned this idea and instead attempted to escape by going over a shorter chain link fence where he was caught by Berrie and Griffith and was taken to the ground, Alvarez and the officers had a brief scuffle when Alvarez continued to try to escape. Alvarez was overpowered and was handcuffed and placed under arrest. Alvarez was searched and a plastic baggie was found in his pocket containing suspected marijuana along with several clear plastic baggies. While checking the area around where Alvarez had attempted to go over the wooden fence, more plastic baggies similar to the one located in the pocket of Alvarez were found. Several of the plastic baggies contained a white crystal substance that tested positive for Methamphetamine.  Also located was another plastic baggie containing suspected marijuana. 


Alvarez was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and booked in for Manufacture Delivery of a Controlled Substance equal to 4grams, less than 200 grams, Possession of Marijuana less than 2 ounces, Evading Arrest Detention with a Previous Conviction. Additionally Alvarez was found to have a warrant issued by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Division of Pardon and Parole for a Parole Violation.
