Press Release #040714(01)-Defective License Plate Light Leads to Drug Arrest

Shortly after 1 am on the 7th of April, 2014, Officer K. Lane while on patrol in the 1600 Block of Shiloh, observed a 2012 Toyota passenger car, the vehicle's license plate was not operable. Officer Lane initiated a traffic stop for the defective light and as he approached the vehicle he could detect an odor of burnt or burning marijuana. Officer Lane and Officer E. McAndrews, who had arrived to provide back up for Lane asked the occupants of the vehicle to exit the vehicle. The officers searched the vehicle and during the search a container was located, inside the container was marijuana and a blue pipe containing residue of what officer Lane believed to be burnt marijuana. He also located several other containers containing stems and seeds he believed to be from marijuana. On the passenger side floor of the vehicle he found the remains of a marijuana cigarette, commonly called a roach.  


The vehicle occupants were also searched, the driver identified as 23-year-old Melanie Lopez of San Angelo was found to have in her possession several pills and a baggie that contained a white powder like substance. The pills were identified as Cyclobenzaprine and Clonazepam and the white powder tested positive for cocaine. Lopez was arrested for Possession of Marijuana less than 2 oz., Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Dangerous Drugs and possession of Drug Paraphernalia.


The rear passenger identified as 24-year-old Kord McDaris of Mertzon TX., was found to have in his possession a crystal like substance that field-tested positive for Methamphetamine. McDaris was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance.


A third subject, a 22 year old also from Mertzon, who was riding in the front passenger seat, was released on the scene.
