Press Release #053014(19)-San Angelo Police Locate, Arrest Two Graffiti Suspects

Eighteen-year-old San Angelo residents Jeremiah Sosa and Carlos Mendieta have been arrested in connection to State Jail Felony Graffiti that was done to the Newton Building located at the Central High School Campus, 655 Caddo Street.

 

Police first learned of the graffiti after being summoned to the school shortly after midnight on May 23.  Later that morning, detectives with the San Angelo Police Department's Special Operations Section (SOS) responded to the school for further investigation and developed information about a possible suspect, Jeremiah Sosa.  Detectives located and interviewed Sosa; however, he denied any involvement. 

 

As the investigation continued, the detectives developed more information linking Sosa to the graffiti incident, including video surveillance footage from a local retail store that showed Sosa purchasing the same colors of spray paint used in the incident.  Based off this information, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Sosa on May 29. 

 

Police located Sosa just after 3:00 p.m. on May 29, sitting inside his vehicle in front of a residence in the 300 block of E. 29 Street.  Sosa was taken into custody without incident.  During a search of Sosa incident to his arrest, police located a quantity of suspected methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

 

During a search of Sosa's vehicle incident to his arrest, police located several cans of spray paint and writings that matched the graffiti at the school.  Detectives also located evidence that Sosa had an accomplice to the graffiti incident, Mendieta. 

 

Today, May 30, 2014, detectives obtained an Arrest Warrant for Mendieta and located him just after 12:30 p.m. at a residence in the 700 block of E. 17 Street.  Mendieta was arrested without incident.

 

Sosa was charged with Felony Graffiti Worship Burial/Public Monuments/School, Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Marijuana.  Mendieta was charged with Felony Graffiti Worship Burial/Public Monuments/School.

Press Release # 052814(18) Shoplifter Arrested After Brief Foot Pursuit

A broadcast call regarding a shoplifter at a local store leads to the arrest of the suspect and seizure of suspected stolen property early this morning.

 

May 28, 2014, at approximately 3:50 a.m., San Angelo Public Safety Communications (Dispatch) received a call regarding a shoplifter who had just left Wal-Mart Supercenter located at 610 W 29th Street with a 37? television.  While officers were responding to the store, Dispatch sent out a radio message stating the suspect had left the store and was running through the field towards MLK Blvd. 

 

SAPD officer, Tony Lopez, arrived first and set up a perimeter with other patrol units who began searching for the suspect.  SAPD Officers Pruitt and Thomas soon located the suspect and pursued him to the 300 block of W 26th Street where Noriega jumped a fence to private property.  Officers Pruitt and Thomas continued the pursuit of suspect who was quickly arrested. 

 

After the suspect was handcuffed, he was identified as Joshua Noriega (DOB 04-12-93) of San Angelo.  Once officers placed Noriega under arrest, a search of his person revealed a driver's license and debit card that had been taken in a vehicle burglary earlier in the evening.   Noriega requested medical treatment for an injury to his foot.   San Angelo Fire Department Medics were requested to the scene to address Noriega's complaints and transport him to a nearby hospital for evaluation.  Upon his release from the hospital, Noriega was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with Evading Arrest/ Detention, Class B Theft of Property, and Criminal Trespass.  The television Noriega reportedly stole from Wal-Mart was recovered in the parking lot and returned to the store.   The driver's license and debit cards found on Noriega's person were also returned to the victim of the vehicle burglary.   The investigation into the vehicle burglary is ongoing.

Press Release #052414(17)-San Angelo Police Ask for Public?s Help in Criminal Mischief Case

The San Angelo Police Department is asking for help in locating the person(s) responsible for causing damage to a gate and the maintained dirt roads out at the Equalization Channel this weekend.

 

Sometime during the late night hours of May 24 to the early morning hours of May 25, 2014, an unknown person(s) forced entry through and damaged the gate out at the Equalization Channel leading to the North Pool of Twin Buttes.  After forcing their way through the gate, the offender(s) drove into the North Pool land area and caused extensive damage by ?mudding? on the maintained dirt roads.

 

City Officials with the Operations Department estimate the cost to repair the damaged gate and roadways will be $5,000-8,000 dollars.

Press Release #052714(16) - SAPD Recognizes D.R.E.A.M. Essay Winners

On May 28th, 2014, The San Angelo Police Department will host an awards presentation for the Spring 2014 D.R.E.A.M. Essay Contest Winners.  The ceremony will take place in the Chief's Conference Room, 401 E Beauregard, at 4:00 p.m. 

 

SAPD D.R.E.A.M. officers Erica Morris and Rodrigo Hernandez selected 22 essays out of 500 written to be considered for placement in the contest.  The overall winners were selected by Assistant Police Chief Jeff Fant.

 

The Essay winners are:

The Drug Resistance Education and Mentoring (D.R.E.A.M.) Program was developed by the San Angelo Police Department in 2008 to address local needs and concerns affecting the youth in our community.  Topics such as drug abuse and resistance, bullying, internet safety, and peer pressure are just some of the subjects presented by uniformed officers. Currently two officers teach approximately 1,000 5th grade students each year in public and private schools throughout San Angelo.

Press Release #052114(15)-Arrest Made in Chicken Express Aggravated Robbery

A 19-year-old San Angelo man was arrested late this afternoon in connection to last night's Aggravated Robbery in the parking lot of the Chicken Express located at 2831 N. Bryant Boulevard.   

 

Michael Martinez (DOB 07-14-94) was located this afternoon outside a residence at the Nueva Vista Apartments, 2401 North Lillie.

 

Martinez was identified as a likely suspect after Technicians with the Department's Crime Scene Investigations Section obtained a positive match on a palm print that was lifted from the victim's vehicle.   Martinez also showed to have two outstanding Warrants for Family Violence Assault.       

 

After learning about a possible location for Martinez, Detectives with the Special Operations Section and Criminal Investigations Division set up surveillance of the complex.  At approximately 2:30 p.m., investigators located Martinez and took him into custody for his outstanding warrants.    During the field investigation, police located the mask Martinez used to rob the restaurant's employee at gunpoint.  Police have also located a handgun suspected of being used in the robbery.      

 

At the time of his arrest, Martinez was in possession of marijuana and methamphetamine.  After his interview with investigators, Martinez was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with Aggravated Robbery, Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana, Felony 3 Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, and his outstanding Warrants.
