We currently have four K-9 teams working within the patrol division of the department. We have had as many as six teams in the past. In order to serve as an effective unit, we need four certified teams. The average dog will serve as a Police Service Dog for approximately five years, as they are between two and four years old when they hit the streets. This would allow for the purchase of one new dog per year, preventing us from having to purchase several dogs at once by staggering the ages of our dogs.
