SAPD Canine Thor Sniffs out Nearly $49K in Narcotics during Traffic Stop

November 3, 2017 — Two San Angelo men are facing drug charges fallowing an early morning traffic stop in East San Angelo. 

The stop was conducted around 12:30 a.m. by the Department’s K-9 Unit and Patrol Division, who were conducting narcotics interdiction on North U.S. Highway 67.  The vehicle’s driver, 24-year-old Henry Steven Valverde, was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license and a passenger identified as Randy Lee Avila, 25, was detained. 

During the stop, Police Service Dog Thor was deployed to conduct an open air sniff of the 2014 Chevy Malibu.  Soon after, Thor gave a positive alert to Officers indicating the vehicle contained illegal narcotics.   

Officers located approximately seven (7) ounces of suspected heroin and approximately 2.4 grams of suspected methamphetamine as a result of the stop.  Both substances field-tested positive at the scene. 

Valverde was charged with Felony 3 Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 and Driving While License Invalid.  Avila was charged with Felony 1 Manufacture Delivery of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1.  The pair was booked into the Tom Green County Jail. 

This is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming.
