March 21, 2019 — An armed Felon was taken into custody after a brief struggle with San Angelo Police this afternoon.
Just before 1:00 p.m., San Angelo Police were dispatched to a residence in the unit block of East 22 Street for the report of an unwanted subject.
Upon arrival, the first officer on scene began speaking with a male subject in front of the home when the resident exited and alerted the officer about the subject being in possession of a gun.
When the officer attempted to conduct a pat-down of the subject to check for the presence of weapons, the subject became uncooperative and resisted the officer. During this struggle, the resident began yelling that the subject was reaching for the gun.
Additional units arrived and the subject, later identified as 29-year-old Michael Sanchez Lopez, was taken into custody. The gun, which had been reported stolen early this morning from a vehicle burglary, was located inside Lopez’s waistband.
Once inside the patrol car, Lopez began kicking the windows and he was subsequently placed in a Ripp-hobble to prevent injury to himself.
Lopez was charged with Assault on Public Servant, Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon, Resist Arrest Search or Transport, and an outstanding Parole Warrant. Lopez was booked into the Tom Green County Jail.
Additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of the ongoing Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle investigation.
The officer sustained minor injuries during the altercation. He was treated at the scene by medics and released.
