Press Release #091114(7) Officers Shoot Suspect in Aggravated Assault

A 54 year old man, who was shot by police after committing an aggravated assault, remains hospitalized this evening in critical condition.

At approximately 1:34 p.m. today, San Angelo Police Officers responded to a domestic disturbance at the Remax Office located in the 3500 block of Knickerbocker Rd.  As Officers arrived they spoke with a female victim who had been threatened with a firearm by a male suspect.  The suspect left the area prior to the Officer's arrival but continued to threaten the victim by phone prompting Officers to remain in the area to prevent a further assault on the victim.

At 3:41 p.m., the suspect vehicle (2002 Red Dodge Pickup) was seen by Officers circling the area of the Remax Office.  A Patrol Officer activated emergency lights and sirens after pulling behind the vehicle to initiate an investigative stop.  The driver of the suspect vehicle refused to stop and a brief vehicle pursuit ensued.   The suspect vehicle came to a stop in the 2500 block of Sweetbriar and exited the vehicle with a firearm in his hands.  Officers fired on the suspect, striking him at least one time.    The suspect has been identified as Gerald Cole (02/06/60).

Police requested San Angelo Fire Department Medics to the scene and administered first aid until an ambulance arrived.  Medics transported the suspect to Shannon Medical Center for treatment.  There were no other injuries reported at the scene.

Chief Vasquez is asking that any witnesses who saw the shooting or have video of the incident to call the Police Department at 657-4315 to assist us with the investigation.
