The driver who struck and killed a 33-year-old San Angelo man riding his bicycle on North Van Buren Street Wednesday Evening has been arrested.
48-year-old Clayton Dunn of San Angelo has been charged with Accident Involving Death. He was taken into custody on Thanksgiving Day — one day after he struck 33-year-old Jacob M. Martinez in the 1900 block of N. Van Buren. Martinez later succumbed to his injuries at Shannon Medical Center.
The investigation and search for the suspect began immediately after Police were dispatched to the crash scene, around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 21. Once investigators received a description of the suspect’s vehicle and video footage, the Department used social media to call on citizens for help in locating the vehicle and driver. On Thanksgiving Day, a citizen who read the social media posts noticed a suspicious vehicle in the 900 block of Howard Street and called police. That tip led investigators to locate Dunn and the suspect vehicle, a 2003 GMC 2500 that had damage consistent with the fatal crash.
Dunn was formally charged following his interview with Detectives from the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. Dunn was booked into the Tom Green County Jail. His Bond was set at $50,000.
The Department would like to express our gratitude to our citizens who continue to partner with us in a joint effort to solve crimes and improve the quality of life in our community.
