San Angelo Police Department Motorcycle Officer Injured in Afternoon Attempt to Apprehend Reckless D

February 26, 2018 — A San Angelo teen motorcyclist who led SAPD Officers on several high-speed chases throughout the afternoon was taken into custody around 2:40 p.m. after he abandoned his flight and laid his 2006 Buell Sportbike down in the unit block of W. 19 Street.

The motorcyclist, identified as Cory H. Clearman, 18, first engaged Officers that were working a traffic enforcement operation on the W. Houston Harte Expressway in a high-speed pursuit.  Officer’s terminated the pursuit after losing sight of Clearman; however, Clearman got back on the Houston Harte and passed the Officers at excessive speeds in an apparent attempt to lure Officers into a confrontation.

Soon after, an SAPD Motors Officer attempted to stop Clearman for reckless driving; however, Clearman failed to stop and a pursuit ensued to the 1800 block of N. Chadbourne.  As the Motors Officer pursued, Clearman wove in between two vehicles and subsequently caused the Motors Officer to collide with a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by a 57-year-old San Angelo man.  The 58-year-old Motors Officer received incapacitating injuries as a result of the collision.  He was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment and later released.  The driver of the pickup was not injured.

Prior to Clearman being taken into custody, several witnesses, including members of the media who responded to the crash scene, observed Clearman speeding past the crash, westbound on 19th.

Clearman was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries and later released.  Following the investigation, Clearman was arrested for Felony Evading Arrest Detention with Vehicle.  In addition, Clearman was issued citations for Speeding, No Insurance, Expired Registration, and No Class M Endorsement.

The San Angelo Police Department would like to extend our sincere thanks to the citizens who stopped to render aid to the injured Officer, as well as KLST/KSAN staff who assisted Officers during the investigation.
