Police Arrest Sleeping Driver in Stolen Car

At approximately 9:15 this morning, San Angelo Police were dispatched to the intersection of North Bishop and Caddo Street for the report of a man asleep behind the wheel. 

Officers arrived and located an SUV without license plates stopped at the stop sign at N. Bishop and Caddo.  The vehicle was still in drive.  Officers woke the man and identified him as 26-year-old Virgil John Chapman, Jr., of San Angelo. 

Through a routine records check, Chapman showed to have several outstanding Arrest Warrants and he was placed under arrest.  During a search of his person incident to arrest, Officers located suspected narcotics that field-tested positive for the presence of Methamphetamine.  

A records check on the 2008 Silver Ford Explorer showed it was reported stolen from the 500 block of Van Zandt on Monday, January 9.  During a search of the vehicle, Officers located property that was linked to an unrelated vehicle burglary.  Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Investigations Unit also responded to assist with the field investigation. 

Chapman was transported to Police Headquarters for questioning.  Following his interview, Chapman was transported to the Tom Green County jail where he was booked on Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, State Jail Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, and his outstanding warrants.  

This is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of the investigation.  Detective Jason Chegwidden is the lead Investigator on this case.
