On February 14, 2018, San Angelo Police began investigating an alleged armed robbery that occurred at a residence in the 100 block of North Van Buren Street.
Investigators learned the victim, a 27-year-old San Angelo resident, was robbed at gunpoint on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 13, 2018, by seven men. The suspects stole several items, including a silver-colored 2011 Ford Mustang bearing Texas license plate JYF2280. The incident was captured on surveillance video. The victim was not injured.
Subsequent to a lengthy investigation and coordinated effort from members of the Department’s Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Street Crimes Division, Anti-Crime Unit, Crime Analysis Unit, and Crime Scene Investigations Unit, the seven suspects were identified and Arrest Warrants for Aggravated Robbery were obtained. The suspects were identified as Lorenzo Ortiz Rueda, 42, Ruben Ortiz, Jr., 26, Oscar Ornelas, 54, Gavino Eladio Zapata, 20, Ruben Ortiz Sr., 46, John David Acosta, 38, and David Ray Salas, 21.
On February 15, 2018, members of the San Angelo Police Department executed warrants at a residence in the 100 block of W. Avenue H and another in the 400 block of Mimosa Drive. Subsequent to the warrant operations, Rueda, Ornelas, Zapata, and Salas were located and arrested at the residence on Avenue H. Ortiz Jr. was located and arrested at the residence on Mimosa Drive. In addition to the apprehensions, Investigators located and seized the weapons used in the commission of the robbery as well as most of the stolen property.
Police are still looking for Ortiz Sr., Acosta, and the stolen Ford Mustang. Both suspects are considered armed and dangerous.
