August 5, 2020 — At approximately 4:19 p.m., San Angelo Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Wicklow Court for the report of an unknown problem. While en route, officers were informed that the call was related to domestic violence and that the suspect was armed with a gun.
Responding officers located the suspect’s vehicle fleeing the area and attempted to conduct a probable cause traffic stop; however, the suspect refused to stop and a slow-speed vehicle pursuit ensued.
The pursuit ended near the 4600 block of Arden Road when the suspect exited his vehicle holding a handgun. The suspect then fled northbound on foot, crossing Arden Road into an open field.
Officers instructed the armed-man to stop and drop his gun; however, the suspect disregarded the commands, continued to flee further into San Angelo State Park property, and began firing rounds.
Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. Officers began rendering life-saving measures; however, the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Roberto Hernandez, Jr. of San Angelo.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting alongside the San Angelo Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Office of Professional Standards. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard operating procedure for officer-involved shootings.
