Press Release #091714(09)-San Angelo Police Locate, Arrest Suspect in Stabbing Investigation
Sep 17, 2014   08:22 PM

Miguel R. Avalos (DOB 03-30-86) of San Angelo has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in connection with an overnight stabbing incident.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. last night, San Angelo Police Officers were dispatched to an assault call in the unit block of East Avenue L.  Upon arrival, officers located a victim who had been stabbed in the arm and torso region.  It was learned that prior to the stabbing, the victim was in the area and observed a woman, man and a dog in the street.   The victim heard the woman scream and initially thought the dog may have been hit by a car.  Upon closer inspection, the victim realized it was an assault in progress and the woman was being dragged by her hair down the street.   The victim, acting as a Good Samaritan, attempted to stop the assault when the man allegedly turned his attack towards the Good Samaritan.

The male suspect and his original victim fled the scene after witnesses tried to help the Good Samaritan.  Police searched the area but neither was located.   The Good Samaritan was later admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  Their identity is not being released at this time.

By night's end, the suspect had not been identified and the female who he assaulted had not come forward to police.  With no leads to follow, Detectives with the Department's Criminal Investigations Division and Specialized Operations Section (SOS) returned to the location to canvass the neighborhood? acting on the belief that the suspect and the woman were walking their dog and may live nearby.

This afternoon, the Detectives were continuing their search of the neighborhood when they observed a female who matched the description of the female assault victim, walking in the 200 block of East Avenue J.  Shortly after, the Detectives observed a man who matched the suspect's description.  The man attempted to conceal himself by discarding clothing and ducking into an alleyway.  Police were able to locate the man and identify him as Avalos, who, through a records check, was found to have three outstanding arrest warrants.

Detectives arrested Avalos for his outstanding warrants and interviewed him about last night's incident.   Because of the interview, Detectives developed probable cause to charge Avalos with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.  Avalos was transported to the Tom Green County Jail without incident.

The female subject who detectives observed walking on Avenue J was later located and confirmed to be the woman Avalos was assaulting before the Good Samaritan intervened.  Her identity is not being released.

This is an ongoing investigation and no other information is available for release at this time.
