Press Release #030915(08)-Police Discover Drugs, Handgun During Traffic Stop

Two Dallas teens are facing drug possession and weapons charges after San Angelo Police Officers located a handgun and marijuana during a late-night traffic stop.

 

On March 8, 2015, just after 11:00 p.m., San Angelo Police Officers D. Welch and C. Martin conducted a traffic stop on a gray 2004 Chevrolet Malibu in the area of West Avenue M and South Bryant Blvd.

 

When the officers made contact with the driver and passenger, they detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. 

 

During a probable cause search of the vehicle, officers located a small amount of marijuana and a loaded semi-automatic handgun underneath the front passenger seat.  Officers also located burnt marijuana cigarettes in the vehicle's center console and alcoholic beverages in the back seat. 

 

The driver was identified as nineteen-year-old Maribeth R. Burrell of Dallas, Texas.  During a records check, police learned Burrell had two outstanding Arrest Warrants out of Dallas County for 3rd Degree Felony Prostitution Solicit Person 14-17YOA and Class B Misdemeanor Prostitution.  Burrell was arrested and charged with Class B Possession of Marijuana and her outstanding Arrest Warrants.  Burrell was issued citations for Defective License Plate Light, No Driver's License, and Minor in Possession of Alcoholic Beverage. 

 

The passenger was identified as eighteen-year-old Dana Ortiz of Dallas, Texas.  Ortiz was arrested and charged with Class B Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana and Unlawful Carrying of Weapon.

 

Burrell and Ortiz were transported to the Tom Green County Jail without incident.

Press Release #030815(07)-Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant with a Deadly Weapon

At approximately 5:56 am this morning, Police responded to the 200 block of Westwood for an unknown problem. Upon arrival, Officer Matthew Faz observed a crowd of people standing around a beige 2007 Nissan Altima. The vehicle started to move forward, so Officer Faz put his hands up and told the driver to stop. The driver accelerated. Officer Faz attempted to jump out of the way. The vehicle struck Officer Faz as it sped away.  Officer Faz was transported to Community Hospital for treatment for his injuries.

 

Officer Josh Loudermilk with the Traffic Division and Detective Kelly Lajoie with the Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. 

 

During the Investigation, the vehicle was located by Tom Green County SO Deputies at the Stripes convenience store at 1616 Howard. Synda Manning was located with the vehicle. Manning had been in the vehicle when Officer Faz was hit. Manning was arrested for Public Intoxication. 

 

Through investigation it was learned the driver of the vehicle had been Jeremy Richard Zapata DOB 7-29-87.

 

Detectives with the Special Operations Unit responded to assist in locating Zapata. Information led to Zapta being located at approximately 8:20 am in the 900 block of Shiloh. Zapta was taken into custody without incident.

 

Following the investigation, Zapata was transported to the Tom Green County Jail where he was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant with a Deadly Weapon.

 

Officer Faz's injuries were non-incapacitating and he has been released from Community Hospital. 

Press Release #030615(06)-San Angelo Police Need Help Identifying, Locating Theft Suspects

San Angelo Police need your help identifying and locating a group of suspects who broke into a storage area and stole a camping trailer. 

 

Police have obtained video surveillance footage of the incident, which occurred on February 10, 2015, just before 5:00 a.m. at the Red Bluff Storage facility located at 5961 Knickerbocker road.

 

In the video, you can see a motorcycle, a dark colored SUV, and a white truck arrive to the location.  The subjects drove off but returned a short time later.  After the truck returned, the driver exited, cut the lock on the fence and drove inside.  The SUV followed.

 

The driver of the motorcycle returned and dropped off a passenger who then ran inside.  The passenger, believed to be a female, appears to have been carrying a backpack. 

 

A short time later, the truck exited the facility.  The SUV also exited with the stolen trailer in tow, causing extensive damage to the fence and gate in the process. 

 

Police later located the truck abandoned and learned it had been stolen prior to this incident. 

 

The 2003 Mobile Scout Camper Trailer and SUV will likely have damage to their right side, right back quarter panel, and/or taillights.

Press Release #030515(05)-Injury to Elderly

On February 22, 2015 at approximately 8:37 pm, Police responded to a residence at 805 E 42nd Street for a report of an assault.

 

Upon arrival, Police learned the victim, Virgil Gray DOB 12-19-40, had been assaulted.  Gray received severe injuries to his torso and head.  San Angelo Fire Department Medics transported Gray to Shannon Hospital for treatment of his injuries.  Gray was admitted and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.

 

Through investigation it was learned Casey Aleman DOB 03-14-93, who had recently been staying at the residence, had been the subject that assaulted Gray.  Aleman left the scene prior to police arrival.  Several attempts to locate Aleman were made but all were unsuccessful.

 

Based on the investigation and witness statements, a warrant for Injury to the Elderly was issued for Aleman.

 

On February 23, 2015 at approximately 5:30 pm, Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division and the Special Operations unit located Aleman in the 600 block of Preusser Street.  Aleman was taken into custody on the warrant.

 

On March 4, 2015, Gray passed away at Shannon Medical Center.  Gray will be sent for autopsy to determine the cause of death.  A murder charge against Aleman will be dependent on autopsy results, and the Tom Green County District Attorney's Office will determine what other charges may be filed.

Press Release #030415(04) - Aggravated Assault

Today, at approximately 11:14 am, San Angelo Police Dispatch received a 911 call in reference to a stabbing in the 1700 block of North Pope. 

 

When police arrived they encountered Ruben Stakes DOB 10-14-72 standing in a yard.  Police also located a 47 year old Hispanic female with multiple stab wounds to various parts of her body.  The female victim was treated by San Angelo Fire Department Medics and transported to Shannon Medical Center.

 

It was learned through investigation Stakes was in a dating relationship with the female victim and had assaulted the female victim with a knife.  Stakes was taken into custody without incident.

 

The female victim's current condition is not known at this time.  The victim did require surgery for her injuries.

 

Stakes was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with Aggravated Assault on a Family or Household Member with a Deadly Weapon.
