Press Release #102715(17)-Officer Quade?s Halloween Safety Tips
Oct 27, 2015   08:53 AM

Halloween is one of the most exciting days of the year for children.  Nevertheless, parents and guardians know it also brings with it some potential dangers.  Because of that, it is very important for parents and guardians to talk to their children about safety before they head out for a night of trick-or-treating.

Before Halloween:

  • Choose bright costumes, and have children carry flashlights or glow sticks so they are easily visible. (Hint ? Try adding reflective tape to costumes and candy bags!)
  • Plan a trick-or-treating route in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets.
  • Make sure children know your cellphone number, their home telephone number, and address in case you get separated. Consider giving them a cellphone so they can reach you easily.
  • Teach children how to call 911 in an emergency.
  • Teach children to say ?NO!? in a loud voice if someone tries to get them to go somewhere, accept anything other than a treat, or leave with them. Tell them to try everything they can to escape, including yelling, hitting, and kicking.

On Halloween:

  • Make sure older children take friends and stay together while trick-or-treating.
  • Never send younger children out alone ? they should be with a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult.
  • Always walk younger children to the door to receive treats.
  • Don?t let children enter a home unless you are with them.
  • Be sure children do not approach any vehicle, occupied or not, unless you are with them.

From making sure children stay together while trick-or-treating to planning trick-or-treating routes in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets, these easy and effective tips will help ensure a safer night of fun.

So this Halloween, please take a moment to review Officer Count Quade's safety precautions with the children in your life and help make this Halloween a spooktacular one!

Press Release #102615(15)-San Angelo Police Officers to Grow Beards in November to Raise Awareness f
Oct 26, 2015   02:11 PM

Starting on November 1, 2015, San Angelo Police Officers will begin to grow goatees and beards to help raise awareness for testicular cancer.

The San Angelo Police Department is partnering with the Testicular Cancer Foundation (TCF) in Austin, Texas to raise donations and awareness for testicular cancer.  The TCF was founded in 2009 by Matt Ferstler, a testicular cancer survivor.  The mission of the TCF is to provide education and support to men diagnosed with testicular cancer, provide support to families of testicular cancer patients, and to share its resources with the medical and healthcare communities, schools, and various young men's groups.  Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in males ages 15-35 and is 99% treatable if diagnosed in stage one.

Two years ago the TCF partnered with the Travis County Sheriff's Office in a November Beard Patrol challenge where, for a $25 donation, the Deputies were allowed to grow goatees and beards to raise awareness and support the TCF.  Last year, the Austin Police Department also participated.  This year the TCF has reached out to other Police Departments and Sheriff's Departments around the state to participate.

The San Angelo Police Department is proud to announce their participation in the Beard Patrol challenge this year.   Officers who wish to participate in the challenge will make a $50 donation to a TCF website that has been set up to receive donations and begin to grow goatees and beards on November 1, 2015.  SAPD's female Officers can participate by making donations.

If any citizen wishes to learn more about testicular cancer or learn how to detect the signs of testicular cancer, please visit www.tcancer.org.  If anyone in the community wishes to participate, donations can be made at http://tcf.causevox.com/san-angelo-police-department.  If you grow a goatee or beard we would love to see your progress!
