Press Release #031916(06)-Homicide Victim and Suspect Identified

In reference to the homicide that occurred this afternoon at the Rockbrook Apartments, the victim has been identified as 58 year old Jerry Don Barr.

After the initial investigation of Barr's death, the suspect, 28 year old Thomas Gene Riddle, has been charged with Murder.

There is no other information available at this time. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.


Press Release #031916(05)-Police Investigate Homicide

Today, March 19, 2016, at 4:20 pm, San Angelo Police responded to the Rockbrook Apartments for an assault victim. When Police arrived, Officers met with a witness who stated her boyfriend had been assaulted inside their apartment. Officers entered the apartment and located a 58 year old white male deceased inside the apartment.

Officers learned from the witness she had seen the suspect leaving the area when she was on her way home. The witness provided a description of the suspect. Based on the description, Officers were able to locate the suspect walking on Houston Harte near Olive Garden. The suspect, a 28 year old white male, was taken into custody without incident. It was later learned the suspect was the son of the witness.

Detective Jason Chegwidden and Detective Michael Gaeta responded to the apartments to investigate. Detective Chegwidden is the lead investigator for this case. The cause of death appears to be blunt force trauma, but the cause of death will be determined through an autopsy.

The names of the victim and the suspect are not being released at this time pending further investigation and notification of the victim's next of kin. There is no other information available for release at this time. More information will be released when it is available in a subsequent press release.


Press Release #031016(04)-Upcoming Rookie Police Officer Examination

The City of San Angelo is seeking applicants for the April 23, 2016 Entrance Examination for Rookie Police Officer.
Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016 in the City's Human Resources Department located at 1 City Hall Plaza, San Angelo, TX 76903. The April 23 exam will be held at the McNease Convention Center, 501 Rio Concho Drive. San Angelo Texas, 76903. Registration is from 8:30-9:00 a.m. Applicants must present their Driver's License and Social Security Card at registration.
Study material for the peace officer civil service entrance exam can be checked out from the Police Department's Community Services Division at 505 S. Chadbourne once an application to take the exam is filed with Human Resources. There is no charge for checking out the material.
Applicants traveling 90 miles or more will be allowed to take the physical agility test following the written exam. All local applicants will complete the physical agility test the following Saturday, April 30, 2016. The time and location will be determined after completion of the written exam. Press Release #030416(03)-Teen Driver in Arden Road Crash Charged with Manslaughter

A teen driver who was involved in the February 17 fatality crash on Arden Road has been charged in connection to the death of 28-year-old Adrian Hernandez.
The driver, a 15-year-old male juvenile from San Angelo, was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Juvenile Justice Center Wednesday.
In the days following the deadly crash, Investigators with the San Angelo Police Department's Traffic Section, Criminal Investigations Division, and Crime Scene Investigations Section conducted a comprehensive investigation and obtained evidence to support the charge.
Hernandez was attempting to enter onto Arden Road from Oxford Street when the teen driver's 1992 Dodge Diesel Pickup struck his vehicle. Hernandez was extricated from his 1998 Honda Accord and transported to Shannon Medical Center but later succumbed to his injuries. Investigators later determined the truck to be traveling approximately 25 miles over the posted speed limit just prior to the crash.
CID Detective Kelly LaJoie and Traffic Investigator Ed Hunger were the lead investigators on this case. The driver's name is not releasable due to his juvenile status.

Press Release #030416(02)-San Angelo Police make Arrest for Aggravated Assault

Yesterday, March 3, 2016 at 11:35 am, San Angelo Police were dispatched to the 2400 block of Sherwood Way for a subject with a gun. Officers arrived and met with the victim. The suspect had already left the area and was unable to be located at that time.

The victim reported he had seen the suspect trying to open car doors and confronted the suspect. The suspect pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim prior to running away. When Officers reviewed some surveillance video that caught this incident on camera it was seen that the suspect had actually fired the handgun in the direction of the victim.

The surveillance video was turned over to SAPD's Crime Analysts who were able to identify the suspect as 18 year old Kurt Sword. While conducting follow-up on the investigation, Sgt Doug Thomas and Detective Lynn Dye went to Stripes at 901 Glenna after it was learned Sword frequents the store. Sword was located in a car parked at the store and was taken into custody without incident. A handgun matching the description of the one used earlier was located in Sword's possession.

Sword was transported to the Police Department to be interviewed by the lead investigator for this case, Detective Adrian Castro. Following the interview, Sword was transported to the Tom Green County Jail where he was booked for Aggravated Assault and a warrant for Fail to Identify.
