At approximately 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2018, San Angelo Police responded to the Super Mercado located at 1505 South Chadbourne for the report of an armed robbery in the parking lot just north of the store. 

Responding Officers learned that prior to the robbery, the male victim, a 25-year-old San Angelo resident, had corresponded with the suspect through Facebook regarding the sale of the victim’s gaming system.  The suspect, who went by the Facebook username of Alex Olvera, expressed interest in purchasing the system and then made arrangements to meet the victim in the store’s parking lot.  At some point during the transaction, the suspect pointed a handgun at the victim before he fled the scene on foot.  No one was injured during the incident, which was captured on the store’s surveillance video. 

Officers were shown the suspect’s Facebook Page and immediately developed a possible location for the suspect in the 1200 block of South Hill Street. 

The Department’s Criminal Investigations Division responded for further investigation and the Department’s newly formed Anti-Crime Unit (ACU) began surveillance. 

After several hours of surveillance, members of ACU and K9 Units along with members of the Patrol and Criminal Investigations Divisions established a perimeter around the residence and attempted to make contact with the suspect.  Soon after, the suspect surrendered to Officers without incident.  He was identified as Alejandro “Alex” Raymond Olvera, 26. 

During a warrant search of the residence in which Olvera was taken in to custody, Investigators located and seized the victim’s stolen property, the clothing Olvera was wearing when he committed the robbery, as well as the suspected handgun used during the robbery. 

Olvera is currently detained at the Tom Green County Jail in lieu of $50,000.00 bond, charged with Aggravated Robbery. 

Both law enforcement and Facebook Officials urge users to exercise caution when engaging in face-to-face meetings to buy and sell items.  Safety tips include: 

• Meet people in well-lit public places that have working surveillance cameras
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash (Use a service like PayPal or Apple Pay)
• Avoid meeting the buyer/seller alone (Bring friends or family members with you)

January 19, 2018 — A hit and run driver that collided with Jackson’s Ladies Fashions, 2418 W. Avenue N, has been located and cited.

The investigation began around 9:40 this morning when the Department’s Hit and Run Investigator, Officer Steven Quade, responded to the location and found significant damage to the Store’s brick façade and interior.  Racks of clothing are believed to have stopped the vehicle from completely entering the store.

Through investigation, Officer Quade located the damaged suspect vehicle, a blue 2015 Hyundai Sonata, parked at a nearby convenience store.  The vehicle, which donned remnants of brick and other debris from the collision, was unoccupied.

Subsequent to Officer Quade’s field investigation the vehicle’s driver, Jennifer Torres, 22, of San Angelo, was located and interviewed.  Torres claimed no injury from the collision.  Torres is not the vehicle’s registered owner. 

Torres was cited for No Driver’s License, Failure to Control Speed, and Failure to Stop and Leave Information – Duty on Striking Structure.

On January 16, 2018, Members of the San Angelo Police Department’s Street Crimes Division (SCD), perusing the City for criminal offenders, observed wanted parolee Joseph Smart traveling in a black passenger car.  

After observing a traffic violation, SCD directed Patrol Officers to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle near S. College Hills Boulevard and Millbrook Drive.  The vehicle’s occupants were identified as Ashley Segler, 23, Monica Mares, 21, and Joseph Smart, 28, who was subsequently taken into custody for his Parole Violation Warrant. 

During a search of the vehicle incident to Smart’s arrest, Officers located and seized a small amount of suspected methamphetamine, assorted drug paraphernalia, and five check books that had been reported stolen during a recent residential burglary. 

The trio was transported to Police Headquarters for interview regarding the stolen checks.  Additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of that ongoing investigation.  

Segler was arrested for Driving While License Invalid, Mares was arrested by City Marshals for City Warrants, and Smart was additionally charged with State Jail Felony Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1.

A deceased man located inside a parked vehicle at the Walmart located at 5501 Sherwood Way Tuesday afternoon has been identified as Gordon Earl Tibbs, Jr., 59, of Prosper, Texas. 

San Angelo Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the location around 1:30 p.m. January 16, 2018, for the report of a deceased subject that was inside a parked vehicle.  Justice of the Peace J.P. McGuire responded to the location and formally pronounced Tibbs deceased by [preliminary] natural causes, related to ongoing health issues.  No foul play is suspected.

San Angelo Police have arrested a man who is alleged to have robbed a transient couple at gunpoint inside his residence late Monday night. 

The Investigation began around 10:00 p.m. January 15, 2018 when Police were dispatched to Shannon Medical Center for the report of an assault victim.  

The victim, age 30, and his 29-year-old girlfriend were panhandling near the Stripes Convenience Store located at 1606 La Follette Street when they met a man who offered them refuge from the cold.  

After retrieving money from a nearby Western Union, the couple accompanied the man to a residence in Northeast San Angelo where they were subsequently robbed at gunpoint.  The suspect allegedly threatened to kill the couple if they reported the incident to police and struck and injured the male victim before forcing the couple out of the residence at gunpoint. 

Following a lengthy investigation by the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, Detectives pursued leads and conducted surveillance on a residence in the 1600 block of Beacon Street.  As a result, members of the Department’s Criminal Investigations, Street Crimes, and Patrol Divisions located and arrested Albert Garcia, 27, of San Angelo.  Investigators also located a firearm inside Garcia’s residence.  Garcia was transported to Police Headquarters for interview and subsequently charged with two counts of Aggravated Robbery. 

Additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of this ongoing investigation.
